Biography
Dr. Akiko Yoshida teaches several sociology courses (some of which are cross-listed with anthropology, Asian studies, women's and gender studies, and race and ethnic studies) including Introduction to Family Studies, Methods of Social Research, Contemporary Japanese Society, Gender and Family in Japan, Population Studies, and Minority and Multiracial Families.

Dr. Yoshida's research focuses on singlehood, family carework, gender roles, and intersection of gender, class, race-ethnicity, and nationality. Publications include a research monograph, Unmarried Women in Japan: The Drift into Singlehood (Routledge, 2017), research articles in Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Family Issues, Marriage and Family Review, and Contemporary Japan, and book chapters in Women at Work: Tupperware, Passion Parties, and Beyond (Lynne Rienner Publisher, 2011) and Studying Japan: Handbook of Research Designs, Fieldwork and Methods (Nomos, 2020). Current research explores impacts of COVID-19 on singles in Japan and transnational parental care by Japanese women living in the U.S.
